The Muslim Family Guide to Successful Homeschooling Advice on Teaching and Parenting the Muslim Child Jamila Alqarnain 9780615542959 Books

The book captured valuable insights & advice from Muslim parents and had many gems in it - the 'Behavioral Contract' idea for teenagers was brilliant, to give just one example - the chapter on 'unit studies' was also very helpful - However, the format of this book took a little getting used to - Firstly, it read more like a collection of thoughts than an instructional book - Secondly, without the proper quotation marks it was confusing to figure out which of the statements were from parents & which were the author's own reflections. It also felt quite long drawn out which is okay if you are looking for something to read just once at a more leisurely pace, but if you, like me, also want the book to be a little more i.e. a reference book for the future, with very direct, concrete outline & steps that one can go back to (long after we have finished reading the book for the first time) then the format of this book does not make that exercise easy.

Also, curiously enough, even though the last chapter covered some famous people who were homeschooled, I was surprised to find that there was no mention of famous Muslim scientist, thinkers etc in history who were also homeschooled. And that was odd esp. given that homeschooling was a very common & natural practice / tradition in the Islamic world. So I simply don't understand why, in a book specifically dedicated to Muslim Homeschooling, the names of eminent Muslim homeschoolers would be left out. After all, if we wish to teach our children about Islamic traditions & history, won't it be beneficial for them to know who the famous Muslim Homeschoolers were / are? If the author decides to produce a revised edition, I would highly recommend they update that chapter to include that info. Another good addition to the book would be a chapter detailing how to actually select / design a curriculum and where to obtain the most current books & materials from esp. the age-specific Islamic books. I did not feel that this book covered that info adequately.

Aside from the few things mentioned above, this book was a good effort esp. considering, that in the growing sea of homeschooling books, very few books actually exist that deal specifically with the subject of Muslim Homeschooling. That in itself makes this book quite valuable.

I liked this book very much. Very clear & easy to read. It consisted of interview excerpts mostly. Very helpful for a future/first time homeschooler and even parent in general. I found the explanation of the 13/14/15 year age range especially helpful. I will be able to reference this book for many years to come. Thank you (JAK) for your efforts & putting this book together in such a thoughtful way.
I recieved this book and could not put it down. The author is honest and does not hide the complexities of homeschooling your child, She also highlights the rewards as well, Namely pleasing Allah (swt) and having children with a STRONG MUSLIM IDENTITY. One part to pay particular attention to making your homes 100% ISLAMIC, Follow closely what your kids are reading, watching and doing. Islam first, and success will follow Insha Allah. And be ORGANISED!!!!Pray and do many Duas. (some good duas are mentionned in the book. Great book, and may Allah reward the author for her advice and perseverance. Remember do not regret whatever career you are giving up, you only get one small window of opportunity to properly educate your child! Make the right choice for thier sake. BUY THIS BOOK, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. Small price for such sound advice!
Bismillah...

This is by far one of the best books out there for the Muslim homeschooler who has tons of questions. Easy to read and understand, the book is filled with raw, honest experiences and challenges real women have faced in this field. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading because it excited me and gave me so much confidence about homeschooling! 1-2-3... Here we go insha'Allah!
it's very comprehensive, covers many aspects, pressing on the Islamic knowledge and connecting kids with Allah, jazaki Allah khairan and may Allah bless you.
Wonderful book! Full of inspiration on the challenges and rewards of raising and teaching our children in a wholesome Muslim household. She includes beautiful dua to say for our children and ourselves as a reminder that Allah is in control of everything.

The author states the essence of her book in the following statement "I have no regrets. I believe, as many of the other homeschool mothers have said, that all the things you give up mean nothing compared to your child's education and Islamic upbringing."

I highly recommend this book to all parents considering or already homeschooling their kids and in need of encouragement.
I've often wondered how other families have homeschooled and wish to have heard their experiences. Well, this book did just that, it allowed an inside look at many different families with their own dynamics. I enjoyed reading about the experience that parents had with older kids, since my children are still young. The book is filled with real life experiences and lots of practical advice. A must have for parents with young children so that they can benefit from the advice of parents who have already dealt with the changes that puberty may bring. Even parents who don't homeschool should get this book and read the chapter about dealing with teens and pros and cons of public school. Great book. I love it!
Muslims were the first to home school. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, went to jail for child abuse for home schooling his children. Sister Jamila AlQarnain has penned an engaging book based on her and other's experiences has home schoolers. In a time when schools are closing due to lack of money, and school systems are focusing more on testing than on teaching, home schooling is the logical plan A. You don't have to be a Muslim to benefit for reading this book. But you do have to have a love for your children... so much so that you're willing to sacrifice what many consider "free" time to engage them as only a parent can.
